Science Field Trip 2011 - W5, Belfast
W5 at night
This years science field trip (step 2 of our DPS log) took us to W5, on the bank of the River Lagan, at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast.
W5 has almost 200 interactive exhibits in four exhibition areas and provides a unique experience as well as fantastic fun for visitors of all ages. As well as permanent exhibits, W5 also presents a programme of large and small scale temporary exhibitions and events. There is a daily programme of live science demonstrations and shows. We travelled last December to visit W5 where we took time to see the permanent exhibits (such as pulleys and gears) and took part in a workshop on materials (Fizz, Bang, Pop!) and another on Sound. We learned about how materials can change and we composed our own music using special software on computers.

About the workshops: Workshops at W5 are all specifically developed to link with the curriculum. They help pupils visualise difficult concepts and theories by using a range of active teaching methods.
Workshop 1- Fizz, Bang, Pop Pupils have the opportunity to make first-hand observations in a real science lab. They carry out experiments to explore changes brought about by heating, cooling and chemical reactions and must decide if these changes are reversible or irreversible
Learning Outcomes: Pupils will understand that change can be permanent or temporary.
They will understand the effects of heating and cooling on states of matter.
They will develop investigation skills and be aware of appropriate laboratory conduct.
Involved Learning Styles
Visual/Spatial, Verbal/Linguistic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal
Thinking Skills Involved
Analysing, making predictions, hypothesising, drawing conclusions, relating causes and effects, designing a fair test.
Plaster Fridge Magnets
When we returned we got some paint and glitter and decorated the plaster shapes we made in the lab. Later we stuck a magnetic strip to the back of the plaster shape so we could use them as fridge magnets.
Workshop 2 - Sounds Groovy Too
In this workshop pupils discovered what sound really is through demonstrations and look at different ways of representing it. They then worked creatively with music by investigating, experimenting, selecting and combining sounds to express their ideas in a groovy tune, using innovative software.
