SEAI Energy and Science Workshop

This years science visitor was Caitríona from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. The whole school were involved in brilliant workshops where we learned about where energy comes from, global warming and the science of energy. 
Experiments completed: 
  • Newtons Cradle - transfer of energy
  • Transfer of Energy (basketball an tennis ball) 
  • Popping the top off a Yop bottle - force of energy
  • Lemon battery - a light bulb powered by a lemon - electrical circuits

Energy Workshop Report by Lewis
Yesterday Caitríona from the SEAI (= Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland) told us about how you can create energy. A light switch is connected to a circuit so when you turn the lights off it breaks the circuit. I also learned that there was a metal called Zinc. We saw how you can transfer energy from a basketball to a tennis ball. We also learned about Newtons cradle. If you pull a ball on one side, the other ball will come out the other side and it does that until there is no more energy left to push the other metal balls. We saw the vitamin c tablets in a Yop carton and the lid popped off it. I found out that mosquitos might come to Ireland if we keep using fossil fuel.
Ways to save energy: Turn off the lights when they are not needed. Pull the plug out of the wall of the t.v.

Energy Workshop Report by Emma
Caitriona from SEAI=Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland visited our school. Stuff I learned today - she used a basket ball and a tennis ball, she put the tennis ball on the basket ball and it bounced really high. It transferred energy through the balls. 
If you leave lots of plants to die they will start to layer over and over again and eventually it will turn into peat after thousands of years and it will turn into coal and in more thousands of years and eventually it will turn into diamonds.
It takes eleven months to make one can but if you recycle it only takes five days to re-make it.
We made batteries out of lemons, zinc and copper, we joined them with wires and made electricity.
Issac Newton invented the Newton’s cradle. If you pull one ball, one comes out the other side, if you pull two out two come out, if you pull three out three will come. Caitriona got some Yop bottles and put one vitamin c tablet in with some water and shook it, 7 seconds later it exploded because it created a gas. At the very end we played a giant board game the counters were us and she asked us a question if we landed on one.

Energy Workshop by Eimear
Yesterday a girl called Caitríona came to our school. She works for Suitable Energy Authority Ireland (or for short seai). She told us all about energy and how it works she also told us    ways to save energy.
But the most important thing is if you don’t save energy more and more mosquito will be arriving in Ireland. Some have already arrived in Cork.
She told us who invented the Newton Cradle - he was called Issac Newton. She did lots of experiments - she did the yop carton and flying lid and she did the one with lemons it was called a lemon battery and basketball and tennis ball. Then we played a big game called Guzzler Big Board Game - we didn’t win but it was still fun.

Energy comes from a source. Most of it is powered by electricity, which is powered by fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are peat, coal, oil and gas. It’s better to use other energy sources such as wind turbines and solar power because they are renewable.
Fossil fuels are bad, because they make us dig up the grass which is bad for our environment.
Saving Energy: Instead of taking a bath, take a shower, don’t take a whole hour. Climate change is very bad; it is bringing different creatures to out country such as the mosquito. The mosquito causes a very deadly disease called malaria. Malaria causes half a million people a year in Africa to die. Many people are allergic to mosquitoes in our country, so that’s why climate change is bad.
Going to school: It is easier to walk, cycle or take a bus to get to school. A bus is better than a car because it burns less fuel if loads of people are in one instead of one in all. You can walk or cycle if you are near the school, or if you are in the mood for a morning cycle!
