Welcome to our on-line school science log.
Newsflash! We now have 10 Awards of Science and Maths Excellence in Knockconan NS. Well done all pupils and staff!
Our plaques of STEM excellence are proudly displayed on the wall at the entrance to the school.

Primary science web site here!
We are now working on our tenth year of taking part in the Discover Primary Maths and Science Programme. This programme means that we get lots of experience of maths and science, both of which are really important subjects in the curriculum at primary school and beyond.
There were five sections to complete (see below). We decided to create this web site so we could upload lots of our work and use it as a resource in the future. We took pictures and made multimedia presentations during the year so that we could add them to the web site. Browse the pages of this site to see how we completed each section. This year we continued to develop our online log and we will be adding even more over the coming weeks so please come back and visit again!
We will involve all classes as much as we can in some aspect of the steps outlined below e.g. investigations, using ICT and maths, trips, speaker visits, presenting at or attending the science open day in the school or other eve.
For 2018 / 2019 we have worked hard to achieve a Plaque of STEM Excellence. Here are the steps we completed:
STEP 1 SCIENCE: Evidence of the children engaging in hands-on science investigations in school (indoors or outdoors).
6 hands-on science investigations, with at least one from each of the four strands
STEP 2 TECHNOLOGY (ICT): Evidence of how the children used technology as part of their school work. By technology in this step we mean Information Communications Technologies [ICT].
2 or more examples of the children using ICT such as participating in the Irish Computer Society Scratch programme at www.ics.ie/scratch, developing a blog, website or video, using technology to record and analyse data collected e.g. a spreadsheet or graph or evidence of the children developing a PowerPoint presentation
STEP 3 ENGINEERING: Evidence of how children investigated engineering in class or in the local area
2 or more examples of the children doing a design and make activity e.g. making models (exploring, planning, designing, making, evaluating) like design a bridge, a boat, a rocket, a water pump.
Invite an engineer to the school to speak to the children about their work
STEP 4 MATHS: Provide evidence of how the children used their maths skills
2 or more examples of the children using maths skills and knowledge as part of science e.g. measuring distances, capacity, weight, recording and analysing data. Using maths operations; ratio, percentages, averages, developing a maths trail around school.
STEP 5 STEM SHOWCASE: Evidence that the children shared their science work with others a science fair or display
