STEP 3 ENGINEERING: Evidence of how children investigated engineering
1.Engineers Visit to the School
We invited an engineer to the school to speak to the children about their work - his name is Mathias Crudden. He came today, Friday 15th May. He is a mechanical engineer and he works for Kingspan. Kingspan is a local complany but it has sites all over the world. It has a factory in Monaghan and its headquarters are in Kingscourt in Cavan. Kingspan is a global leader in high performance insulation, building fabric, and solar integrated. www.kingspan.com
Engineer’s Report 15/5/15
Today, our teacher’s brother-in-law Matthias Crudden, an engineer working in Kingscourt, Co. Meath, visited us for Engineer’s Week. He introduced himself and showed us a PowerPoint on his job and his company, Kingspan. He explained all sorts of things including how Kingspan made insulation items, timber-based houses, oil tanks, septic tanks, wind turbines, solar panels and more! He explained what you needed to do to become an engineer. You need to get high results for Maths, Physics and Science. He then took a photo and left with our brains stuffed full of newfound knowledge.

Engineer Report 15/5/15
Today we had a visit from Matthias Crudden, an engineer from Kingspan in Kingscourt, Co. Meath. He told us about different engineers and what they do. Here are some different types of engineers: Aeronautical Engineers, Agricultural Engineers, Civil Engineers and Practical engineers. He is a Practical Manager. Engineers do different things like designing things and solving problems. Kingspan also make insulation, insulated panels, timber houses, oil tanks, septic tanks, solar panels and wind turbines. To become an engineer you need to accomplish Maths, English and Physics. Matthias has travelled to Italy, Belgium, France, Australia, Germany, England, Wales, Spain, China and many more places for his work. I might want to be an engineer when I grow up be I don’t know for sure.

Engineers Visit
Today we had a visit from Matthias Crudden. He is an engineer from Kingspan in Kingscourt, Co. Meath. He showed us a slideshow about different types of engineering, some of them are Aeronautical Engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Engineers do different things like improving things, solving problems, making and building things and designing and inventings. If you want to be an eingineer, you need to finish maths, English and physics. If you become an engineer, you can travel all over the world. You can travel to China, Belgium, Australia, England and lots more. Kingspan make products like insulation, septic tanks, solar panels and wind turbines. It was really fun!!!

Today the 15th of May a man from Kingspan called Matthias Crudden. He is the project manager for them and he travelled to Italy yesterday. He has been to America, China, Africa and France. He did a PowerPoint on all the things he does in Kingspan. There are loads of types of engineers like chemical and aerial. I will definitely take engineering as a career choice.
Today we had an engineer in the school and he talked to us about his work. There are lots of different types of engineers like mechanics. Engineers design and make things that are very helpful. They design things like Xbox and cars. Kingspan are all over the world but you can choose if you want you don’t have to travel. You need to be good at English and maths and science. You have two choices, you can go straight to it and learn as you go or go to University and learn there.
Today we had a visit from an Engineer. His name was Matthias. He said the things you need to have if you’re a Engineer. You would need good English, good Maths and good Science. He works with a company called Kingspan. He is a mechanical Engineer. He goes to loads of places such as America, England, Italy, all sorts of places. You can take two different routes if you want to be an Engineer. The first one. After secondary school you go straight to work and learn as you go. The second one. After secondary school go to University and learn there. Engineers have all types of jobs like chemical electrical mechanical and aerial.
Today we hade a visit from Matthias a brilliant engineer who works for Kingspan . There are many different types of engineers like for cars, toys, gaming console, airplanes , and lots more. Kinspan sells and makes sun panels and wind machines. They make oil tanks too. When you’re a engineer you can go to other country’s or stay in your country. Matthias has travelled all over Europe. He was in Italy yesterday . There are over a thousand of Kingspan company’s all over Europe . Engineers that travel need to know lots of languages

2. Designing Bridges
We did the design and make activity (exploring, planning, designing, making, evaluating) for design a bridge.
First we talked about bridges and how they are made. We looked up bridges from around the world and we looked at how there are different types and how they can be made from different materials such as metal, wood, brick or stone. We discussed what would make a bridge strong and how it might be difficult to build for example if it had to go across a very wide river or estuary.
For our experiment we used books, coins and toy cars. Teacher gave us three sheets of paper each.
We just tried things out first but then teacher asked us what would be a fair test and we decided that we needed to put the same weight on the bridge in order to compare fairly.
What we found out - We found that you could make the bridge stronger if you made an arch with one or two of the sheets of paper. The romans used arches a lot and some of their bridges are still around today.
We also tried folding paper into a fan or concertina shape. This made it stronger too.
